Conference Description:

In this presentation, I will describe how the vulnerability of giving oneself to a significant other and being received or not received has major implications for human development. More specifically, I will examine how the disruption of expectant hopes to be received by the other leads to a reflexive process of self-shaming, and the self-exclusion of disillusioned desires. Finally, I will describe how the treatment of shame involves the replacement of self-shaming with the mourning process, in which excluded disillusioned desires are welcomed back in to the emotional bloodstream of the self.

Learning Objectives:

As a result of participation in this event, participants should be able to:
  1. At the end of the presentation, participants will be able to describe how passion is manifested in the need to give of oneself and be received by a significant other.
  2. At the end of the presentation, participants will be able to describe how self-shame emerges as a defensive reflex in the aftermath of significant relational ruptures.
  3. At the end of the presentation, participants will be able to describe how mourning fundamentally a process of re-integrating disillusioned desires.
