Cooking on a Hot Stove: Neurobiologically Informed Family Therapy

Director of Family Systems and Services, Yellowbrick

This presentation offers an original formulation of family therapy from a developmental-interpersonal neurobiological perspective. Family therapy at Yellowbrick proceeds in the context of an intensive, neurobiologically informed treatment program for Emerging Adults. Families present with histories of trauma, loss, and disorganization, in varying states of conflict, developmentally stalled and dysregulated. Treating these families requires an active, developmentally attuned approach, grounded in contemporary interpersonal neurobiology, and focused on enacted, affectively charged patterns of relating within the family that impede developmental progress. This presentation will describe recent developments in the field of interpersonal neurobiology and their relevance for understanding the emergence and persistence of individual dysregulation within the family. A model for conceptualizing family process will be described, drawing upon recent neuropsychoanalytic understandings of enactment and their critical role in therapeutic change. Therapeutic processes of disruption, repair, and reintegration in the context of family therapy will be described.

Neuroscience Informed Treatment of Trauma

CEO and Chief Medical Officer, Yellowbrick

This session presents an integrative perspective on the application of attachment theory, developmental and clinical research on self-regulation and the clinical implications of the neuroscience of trauma. The outcome of this integration is a treatment model for emerging adults ages 16 through the thirties whose development has become distorted or arrested due to cumulative or occurrence trauma. Brain maturation in emerging adulthood will be reviewed. The research on the impact of attachment trauma and psychopathology as well as medical disease will be presented. How trauma affects different brain networks and their functioning, with correlates to clinical presentation, will be discussed. A model of treatment that guides interventions based on brain networks affected by trauma will be presented. Finally, neuroimaging data will be presented to support the effective clinical outcomes of this model.
